Lundin

Lundin Golf Club offers a scenic seaside setting combined with a highly enjoyable course layout that makes for an excellent links experience – for much lower green fees than better known courses in this area on the east coast of Scotland. Primarily classic links the golf course briefly includes a more parkland setting just beyond the 'turn' before finishing with four tough finishing holes.

The course goes up and down over undulating ground. It briefly climbs steeply at the par 3 12th hole before another par 3 at the 14th with an elevated tee high above the target green takes you quickly back down closer to the sea. There are sweeping views over the Firth of Forth towards Edinburgh and North Berwick from all around the links.

Founded in 1868 the golf course was originally designed by Tom Morris but extensively re-designed by James Braid in 1909. In 1868 the links were described as 'benty, tussocky and ripe with whin', which is not so far from the case today. The golf course has established a reputation for excellent greens, and for some very demanding par 4 holes.

As the club itself says "A complex links course with open burns, an internal out of bounds (the old railway line), and strategic bunkering, Lundin presents a challenge for the thinking golfer where position from the tee rather than distance will yield just rewards on the scorecard."

Lundin sits directly alongside its neighbour Leven Links – the two clubs initially shared a communal 18 holes with members starting their rounds from their respective ends of the course. By 1907 the combined membership was close to 1400 so it was determined the clubs should split and two separate layouts be established.

Like Leven Links, Lundin Golf Club has regularly been an Open Championship Final Qualifying course when the Open has been held at St Andrews. One of the most remembered Open qualifiers at Lundin was Brad Faxon who successfully claimed his place at St Andrews in 2005 after making the journey to play at Lundin. He has said the course will always have a special place in his heart and Lundin responded by awarding him honorary membership of the golf club.

For an interesting and good value selection of enjoyable yet testing courses, Lundin have combined with Crail, Ladybank and Scotscraig Golf Clubs to offer reduced fee passes for some or all 4 courses. Each is quite different to the other and all are within a 40 minute drive of St Andrews. Links with History has all the booking information required.
