Elie

Elie is set on historic links very close to the town of Elie with golf here dating back to the 15th century. The links have been, and are, played on by a number of clubs but visitors book with the Golf House Club.

This course was where James Braid, the renowned Scottish golf course architect and a local, learnt to play. Old Tom Morris set out 18 holes from an earlier shorter course in 1895. Braid himself made later revisions.

While only a few holes run by the shoreline the sea is almost constantly in sight from all around the links. This is a tight golfing layout with regular changes of direction. There are no par 5s and only two par 3s, but the course still offers plenty of variety.

The three seaside holes are the most memorable, not just for their views. The par 4 10th requires a blind shot that takes you down to a green that slopes towards the nearby beach, the 11th tee sits besides the shore with rocky outcrops to the side of the green and at the long 12th the beach is intimidatingly in the line of your drive. The 13th hole, where the green sits between the shore and steep sloping cliffs, was described by Braid himself as "the finest hole in all the country".

Elie offers an enjoyable round of golf on a challenging classic Scottish links layout.
