Leven Links

Golf has been played on the links at Leven since 1846, but the current course layout only came into being in 1909. Many famous golfers have played on Leven Links, the Amateur Champion Gold Medal is played here every August and is believed to be the oldest Amateur Strokeplay Championship in the World. Lee Westwood won this competition in 1993.

The course is set on the sweeping Largo Bay. The first tee is just alongside the seafront promenade and the first four holes run alongside the shoreline. The golf course works its way along valleys between old sand dunes, and the slopes and shapes of this natural setting come into play throughout the round.

Unlike neighbouring Lundin Golf Club, Leven is a true links course from start to finish and a relatively flat layout. Even the greens lack the undulations of many other links. There are many classic links features around the course including undulating fairways, deep revetted bunkers and large and true greens – and of course the wind off the sea.

On the back nine there are several steeply sloping greens just to add to the challenge. The 18th is a testing finishing hole where two well struck shots are required to reach the large sloping green, avoiding the wide Scoonie Burn which winds its way around the right and front of the green.

Leven prides itself on being an archetypal Scottish links with fine bents and fescues, humps, bumps, hollows and wispy rough.

Leven Links has hosted local Final Qualifying for the Open Championship on 6 occasions between 1978 and 2005.
