Castle Course, St Andrews

The Castle course, opened in 2008, is the 7th and newest course to be managed by the St Andrews Links Trust. It is in a superb setting on a clifftop high above St Andrews to the south of the town. Renowned golf course architect David McLay Kidd, who also created Bandon Dunes, created a links style layout on land that had previously been pan flat. The views are exceptional, particularly looking north towards the town.

The course is named after Kinkell Castle which stood on the headland known as Kinkell Ness in the Middle Ages. This is close to the double green at the 9th and 18th holes.

The Castle is a long and challenging golf course and there are several testing holes, including the dramatic 17th which is played across a rocky chasm. The course is laid out in two loops, and has the undulating fairways of links. It is not designed just for long hitting golfers, with a choice of 5 tees at each hole. However it is a demanding layout and course management is extremely important.

Initial feedback was that the course was what the British would term a 'Marmite' course – you either loved it or hated it. (Google 'Marmite' if you've not heard of it). Some golfers felt the greens were not just difficult but too tricky and in cases almost unplayable, or they disliked the mid fairway hazards. The management have taken some of the comments on board and tweaks and changes have been introduced.

The green fees are to the higher end of Scottish golf courses and the course is a very different proposition to the traditional St Andrews Links in the town - such as the Old, New or Jubilee courses. Overall however the Castle course presents a testing but enjoyable golf experience in a beautiful setting.

The St Andrews Castle course is closed for play between early November and end of February each year.
