Royal Troon, Old Course

The Old Course at Royal Troon Golf Club is a classic Scottish links and a challenging test of golfing ability.

The links are almost out and back – the mid section of the course changes in direction a few times before the turn for home. The front nine mostly have the sea to the golfer's right and the prevailing wind is generally against you on the way home so scoring well on the front part of the course is key. There is heavy and costly rough, as well as plenty of gorse and broom – the local caddies are impressively proficient at finding lost golf balls, they are used to it! Keeping to the fairway at the cost of distance will contribute to a better score.

Troon Golf Club was formed in March 1878. Initially six holes were constructed but by 1888 the golf course had been extended to a full 18. The course received the Royal accolade on its centenary year in 1978.

2016 was the 9th time the Open Championship has been held at Troon. The first occasion was in 1923.

Even the Portland course, originally known as the relief course and redesigned by Dr Alister Mackenzie in 1920, has hosted qualifying rounds for both the Open Championship and the European Open.

The course signature hole on the Royal Troon Old course is the famous par 3 "Postage Stamp", the 8th, which at 123 yards is also the shortest hole on the Open Championship rota. The green is raised and well defended and as the name would suggest, rather small. Despite the distance it is far from an easy par 3 as many, including Tiger Woods who took a six there is 1997, will testify. Gene Sarazan had it tamed in the 1973 Open when he had a hole in one during his first round and in his second took just 2 shots – at the age of 71.

Royal Troon Old course is available for visitor play on three days a week from mid April to the start of October. Between April and the start of September the green fee covers a 36 hole day, including a round on both the Old, Championship course and the Portland golf course. Many visitors choose not to play the 18 holes on the Portland but the fees are the same regardless. Some play 9 holes on the Portland as a 'warm-up' if their tee-times permit.

Single green fees covering just the Old course are only available from early September to the end of the visitor season.
