Western Gailes

Western Gailes has undulating terrain, finely contoured greens, classic deep links rough, punishing pot bunkers and even meandering burns but has very few blind shots – so while an exacting layout it is considered to be a fair test of links golf. Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 US Open Champion, said of Western Gailes "beautiful holes on great land make it endlessly interesting and challenging".

The links are never more than two holes wide on a strip of land sitting between the sea and the railway line. However the golf course is not a straight out and back layout as the clubhouse actually sits towards the centre point of the links. It is holes 5 to 13 that run in a line down the coast with dunes to the right.

Western Gailes Golf Club was founded in 1897. Initially the golf course was allowed to develop naturally from the terrain shaped by the ravages of nature. There have been some necessary modifications over the years but nature still remains the major force in the current layout. Well, apart from the testing placement of numerous bunkers!

Many of the greens are cleverly located within the contours of the dunes. As with all the golf courses along this stretch of the Scottish west coast the wind coming in off the sea can be a major factor in how challenging the course may play.

Prior to recent R&A changes to Open qualifying, Western Gailes regularly featured as a Final Qualifying venue for the Open Championship when played at both Royal Troon and Turnberry. The links have also hosted the Curtis Cup and eight Scottish Amateur Championships.

This is a course that impresses on arrival and will produce a memorable day of golf.

If playing mid-week the green fee includes lunch in the clubhouse – this is a lovely experience in a room with beautiful views across the course, so do consider planning your tee-time to take full advantage of a leisurely lunch in the club dining room.
