Prestwick Golf Club has a long and proud history. Established in 1851 it was the venue for the very first Open Championship in 1860, an event won by Willie Park Snr with a total of 174 shots over 36 holes – which was 3 rounds as the golf course had just 12 holes at the time.

Prestwick remained the home of the Championship until 1872 when two other Scottish courses, St Andrews and the old Musselburgh Links joined the rota. Prestwick Golf Club last hosted the event in 1925. Only the Old course at St Andrews has hosted more Open Championships than Prestwick.

The golf course dips and bends around humps, hollows and dunes. There are blind shots aplenty, pot bunkers, huge bunkers that need steps to get in and out, greens in hollows, raised greens – in short lots of interest and variety to keep golfers thinking all the way around the course.

You understand the difficulties right from the 1st tee when a wayward shot to the right will take you into the adjoining railway station. The 5th hole requires a blind shot over a large sand dune. These links have not changed much in modern times and playing at Prestwick gives you a taste of golfing history.

The clubhouse is steeped in tradition, if you can fit a jacket and tie into your luggage then plan a tee-off time that lets you enjoy lunch in the historic clubhouse Dining Room.
