Royal Aberdeen, Balgownie Links

The Balgownie Links at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club is a traditional Scottish links with lots to challenge even the best of golfers. The Balgownie front nine are considered amongst the very best in the world. The links head out through the dunes for nine holes, the 2nd to 9th holes being parallel to the sea, and return to the clubhouse along a plateau.

The Royal Aberdeen club was founded in 1780, originally as The Society of Golfers at Aberdeen, and is the 6th oldest golf club in the world. The club moved to its current location in 1888. Originally designed by the Simpson brothers of Carnoustie the course was later re-bunkered and lengthened by the famous Scottish golf architect James Braid.

All the classic links features are here. Tight rolling fairways, grassy hillocks, winding valleys through high dunes, gorse and pot bunkers defending narrow greens. The course signature hole is the 8th, a par 3 that can range from a 3 iron one round to a pitching wedge the next, depending on the conditions. Ten bunkers defend the green and a well struck shot to the left of the green is the only way in.

The back nine, which are very different in character to the front nine and more exposed to the wind, present blind tee shots, hidden troughs and difficult putting surfaces.

There are also excellent views along the coast from many points on the golf course. The changing wind, tight greens and a tough finish at the 18th combine to make Balgownie Links a test for all standards of golfer.

In 2014 the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club was the venue for the Scottish Open, the first major European Tour event to visit the Balgownie Links. Justin Rose won the event, during which Rory McIlroy set a course record of 64. The club has previously hosted the 2011 Walker Cup and the 2005 British Seniors Open.

Please note that as the course is more suited to carrying clubs only a limited number of pull carts/trolleys are available for hire. Please request these in advance at the time of booking if required.
